1. Profile of Xu Zhihong

Xu Zhihong, male, Han nationality, born in October 1942, from Wuxi, Jiangsu. He started working in September 1965 and joined the Party in February 1976 with a postgraduate degree. From September 1959 to August 1965, he studied botany in the Department of Biology, Peking University. From 1965 to 1969, he studied for a master’s degree at the Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has successively served as the head of the research group, member of the leading group, deputy director and director of the Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and director of the State Key Laboratory of Plant Molecular Genetics. During this period, he worked in the UK for research work. In October 1992, he was appointed vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In November 1999, he was appointed President of Peking University and Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Xu Zhihong is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, an academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences, a researcher at the Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a professor at the School of Life Sciences, Peking University. Research areas are plant developmental biology, plant tissue and cell culture, protoplast manipulation and plant genetics and plant bioengineering. He is currently a professor at the School of Life Sciences of Peking University and a researcher at the Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Former Chairman of the Chinese Society of Cell Biology, Vice Chairman of the Botanical Society of China, and Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society of Bioengineering; currently Chairman of the International Association of Plant Tissue Culture and Biotechnology, Chairman of the Chinese Society of Plant Physiology, UNESCO Man and the Biosphere China Chairman of the National Committee, Director of the Scientific Ethics Construction Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Professor Xu Zhihong has long been engaged in research on plant developmental biology, plant cell culture and its genetic manipulation, and plant bioengineering. In the fields of plant development, tissue and cell culture, and bioengineering, he has published more than 200 papers, reviews and monographs (volumes).
Professor Xu Zhihong has won the first prize of Natural Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the third prize of National Natural Science. Contributed overseas students and returned to China, and successively received honorary professors from the University of Hong Kong, De Montfort University and Nottingham University in the United Kingdom, City University of Hong Kong, Waseda University in Japan, and McGill University in Canada.
